If you just picked up a WRX, first off — congrats. That car is a blast right out of the lot. But if you’re like most people, the next question is: “What mods should I do first? And what stuff should I just ignore?”
I’ve built and worked on a ton of WRXs over the years — daily drivers, track cars, all of it. Here’s my take on the first mods you should actually do, and the ones that are just a waste of time or money.
1. Suspension & Brakes — Stop the Car First
Before you do anything flashy, make sure the car stops and handles.
Do this first:
-
Brake pads + stainless steel lines — seriously, this is night and day on hard driving.
-
Coilovers or sway bars if you’re planning on canyon runs or track days.
Skip:
-
Cheap spring kits or random coilovers from unknown brands. You’ll regret it — ride quality and handling will suffer.
-
Big brake kits on a new WRX right away. The stock brakes are plenty for street use and most track days.
2. Intake & Exhaust — Don’t Go Crazy
Everyone wants a loud exhaust, but there’s a right way to do it.
Do this:
-
Cat-back exhaust that’s legal and not obnoxious. Lightens the car and sounds better.
-
Good air intake for your engine — helps throttle response without hurting reliability.
Skip:
-
Massive turbo intakes or crazy exhausts on a stock car. Could mess up your tuning.
-
Cheap loud exhausts that just annoy neighbors.
3. Tune — Stage 1 Only
The easiest way to get power without trashing the car.
Do:
-
Stage 1 tune, preferably after adding intake/exhaust. Boosts power safely.
-
Go with a shop or reputable tuner — don’t experiment with sketchy “one-click” apps.
Skip:
-
Tuning a stock car with random mods thrown on. Could stress the engine.
-
Sketchy cheap tunes from online marketplaces.
4. Wheels & Tires — Grip First
Stock wheels are fine, but tires make the car.
Do:
-
Good summer tires for corners and braking. You’ll notice the difference immediately.
-
Lightweight wheels if you’re tracking — reduces unsprung weight.
Skip:
-
Oversized wheels just for looks — kills ride quality and mileage.
-
Cheap tires — nothing ruins a WRX faster than bad grip.
5. Visual Stuff — Keep it Simple
It’s tempting to throw on a giant wing or widebody first. Don’t.
Do:
-
Small mods like lip spoilers, window tint, or plate relocation.
-
Upgraded lighting — bright and functional.
Skip:
-
Widebody kits, giant wings, flashy wraps — expensive and mostly impractical for daily driving.
6. Don’t Forget Maintenance
Mods don’t fix a neglected car. Make sure your oil, plugs, brakes, and cooling system are in check first. A tuned, modded WRX with lazy maintenance is just asking for trouble.
My Take
Start with stuff that actually improves how the car drives and stops — brakes, suspension, tires, then Stage 1 tune. Everything else is optional and mostly cosmetic.
Do it right, and your WRX will be fun and reliable. Do it wrong, and you’ll spend more money than you need to while wondering why it rides like crap.
Quick Tip
Plan your build in stages. Start safe, improve handling and grip first, then power, then looks. That’s the KCG Motorsports way — keeps the car fun without headaches.
