Stop Modifying Your Subaru... Until You Learn How to Drive It.

Yeah, I said it.

Before you spend thousands on coilovers, intakes, aero, wheels, big brakes, tunes, and every shiny part Instagram tells you that you need, ask yourself one question:

Have you actually found the limits of your car yet?

If the answer is no, keep reading.

Now before the show car crowd grabs their pitchforks, this isn't aimed at you. If you're building a hard-parked masterpiece that spends more time at Cars & Coffee than it does attacking corners, that's perfectly fine. Build your car however you want.

This is for the guys who actually drive their cars.

The canyon runners. The autocross addicts. The track day junkies. The people who bought a WRX because they enjoy driving, not because they enjoy collecting parts.

Here's the reality:

Your stock Subaru is far more capable than you are.

That might hurt some feelings, but it's true.

I've been driving Subarus since 2014. That's 12 years of battling understeer, blowing motors, grinding gears, cooking brakes, burning up clutches, and making every mistake possible. Every one of those mistakes taught me something.

When we bought our 2025 WRX in March of 2025, I made a decision that surprised even me.

As an aftermarket performance parts dealer, I told myself:

"For once, let's leave the car stock."

Coming from a restored and purpose-built 2006 WRX, this was completely new territory. Instead of immediately throwing parts at the car, I wanted to understand what Subaru had actually built. I wanted to learn the chassis, learn its strengths, learn its weaknesses, and determine what it truly needed.

That's where most people get it wrong.

A lot of owners buy these cars and within the first month they're ordering coilovers, intakes, J-pipes, tunes, wheels, tires, sway bars, chassis braces, big brake kits, aero, and whatever else their favorite influencer is selling.

Don't get me wrong.

I'd love to sell you every one of those parts. Keeping the lights on is nice.

But there needs to be a purpose behind every modification.

Too often I scroll through Facebook groups and see posts asking:

"What's the best coilover?"

The problem is that's impossible to answer.

The best coilover for someone who drives smooth canyon roads isn't necessarily the best coilover for someone daily driving through pothole-filled city streets. The best setup for a track car may be terrible for a commuter.

Everyone answers based on their experience, their roads, their driving style, and their goals.

Maybe after driving your car for 5,000 miles you'll realize you don't need a $3,500 set of Ohlins.

Maybe you'll discover the stock suspension is actually pretty good.

Maybe you'll realize that giant wing and massive splitter aren't doing anything except attracting attention at the local gas station.

I've driven everything from completely stock Subarus to heavily modified builds, and I've learned one thing:

There's no universally "better" setup.

There's only the setup that's right for your intended use.

Our VB WRX is now sitting at over 15,000 miles, and roughly 80% of those miles have been spirited driving. Countless canyon runs. Countless backroads. Countless opportunities to push the car and understand where it excels and where it falls short.

I haven't even put it on a track yet, and I already know exactly what I would change.

Not because someone on Facebook told me to.

Not because a YouTuber made a video.

Because I've personally reached the limits of the stock components.

For a canyon and track-focused VB WRX, my priorities would be:

  • Better brake pads (EBC Yellowstuff is my preference)
  • DBA T3 slotted rotors
  • Stainless steel brake lines
  • Motul RBF600 brake fluid
  • A stiffer rear sway bar from Whiteline or SMY
  • Quality coilovers from Fortune Auto, Annex, Feal, KW, ST, or HKS
  • Sticky tires like Falken RT660s or 615K+
  • ETS intake
  • ETS J-pipe
  • A proper dyno tune
  • Supporting reliability mods such as oil catch cans

Those modifications alone completely transform the car.

Notice what's at the top of the list?

Brakes. Tires. Suspension.

Not horsepower.

Because if you can't carry speed through a corner, another 50 horsepower isn't going to save you.

As for aero?

Honestly, the car doesn't really need it.

It's nice to have, and chassis-mounted components from APR or Verus Engineering certainly help add stability when you're pushing hard, but it's far from the first thing I'd spend money on.

Too many people build their cars backwards.

They chase horsepower before learning car control.

They buy suspension before understanding weight transfer.

They buy aero before they're driving fast enough for aero to matter.

The fastest drivers I've met aren't the ones with the biggest parts lists.

They're the ones who understand their cars.

So before you order your next modification, do yourself a favor:

Go drive the car.

Take it through the canyons.

Take it to autocross.

Take it to a track day.

Learn what it does well. Learn where it struggles. Learn where YOU struggle.

Because the best modification you can make isn't a part.

It's becoming a better driver.

And once you've truly found the limits of the car, you'll know exactly what modifications it actually needs.
